St. Patrick's Day in Montserrat
One does not have to travel to Ireland to enjoy a great St. Patrick’s Day celebration. Although it may seem odd, every year on March 17, a week-long national celebration is kicked off on Montserrat. St. Patrick's Day is significant to the island’s residents since ancestors of Irish immigrants fleeing religious persecution reside on the island and a slave rebellion occurred on Montserrat in 1798 on St. Patrick’s Day. As a result, Irish and African cultures are combined to make this a truly unique celebration, as evidenced by the green clothed calypso bands. In addition to the traditional St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, tourists can enjoy sponsored tours of historical sites and seminars.
