Carnival Port of Spain, Trinidad and Santiago, Dominican Republic
Carnival is the largest and most popular celebration held in the Caribbean. Many consider the Carnival celebrations held in the Port of Spain, Trinidad to be the largest and most elaborate throughout the region. During the non-stop Carnival celebrations, parades, calypso concerts, and other celebrations are held. Tourists are permitted to walk around the panyards and mas camps to witness the construction of parade costumes and floats and watch calypso bands rehearse. Although this celebration only lasts two days, these days are loaded with festivities. One of the more lively celebrations is the dirty mas, a celebration where Carnival goers get coated in mud and mess around. Carnival celebrations in Trinidad are held the two days prior to Ash Wednesday.
